Website traffic analysis

Bay Hosting's "web site statistics" service supplies our customers with in-depth statistics about hits to their website(s), such as search-engine terms used, visitation profiles (per domain, hour-of-visit, etc) and many more.

Introduction

Options

There are several possible alternatives in order to enable this service for your website. These are listed below:

---- 1. Hosting

Bay Hosting can host your website, and hence provide your statistics as part of our hosting services.

---- 2. Log file access

When the website is hosted by a third party, and Bay Hosting can be supplied - or given access to - the log files for your website, we can produce statistics from those details. This assumes those log files include details suitable for the generation of appropriate statistics.

---- 3. HTML indirection

If access to the log files from your current hosting company is not possible, or the log files are not sufficiently detailed, we can supply a small excerpt of HTML, to be used on each page of your website. This will enable us to generate the relevant statistics on our own servers.

Server log files measure activity at the server, rather than at the client. The server logs are unable to pick up information relating to both cache and proxy servers and will also count all users behind a firewall as one user. The end result being server log files fundamentally undercount site traffic. By including legitimate page views served from the web server, a cache server and proxy servers, a more accurate count of pageviews is provided.

---- 4. Proxying

In unusual circumstances, proxying may be the only way to generate the statistics required - i.e. by having your website accessed indirectly through our hosts. This way, your website content or hosting is not affected, but full statistics are available.
